California Air Resources Board & South Coast Air Quality Management District - funded project to showcase the feasibility of capture and control technology powered by clean-burning methanol-to-hydrogen systems to reduce port emissions.
e1 Marine and STAX Engineering have teamed up to advance emissions reduction in the maritime industry by combining e1 Marine’s Methanol-to-Hydrogen Power Systems (M2PWR) with STAX’s emissions capture and control (C&C) technology. Funded by California Climate Investments through South Coast AQMD and CARB, the collaboration will deploy a demonstration project in early 2025.
The project integrates e1 Marine’s M2PWR system into STAX's barges, providing clean onboard power and demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of emissions reduction for vessels. STAX’s technology already removes up to 99% of particulate matter (PM) and 95% of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from exhaust systems.
Leaders from both companies highlight the partnership as a key step toward sustainable shipping, aiming to exceed emissions compliance and promote cleaner air in coastal communities.
“Partnering with STAX Engineering allows e1 Marine to showcase how our M2PWR system can provide cleaner power for barge operations while in port,” said David Lee, Executive Director of e1Marine. “By combining our technical expertise, we will ensure the system meets all regulatory requirements and complies with evolving emissions mandates. We hope this initiative demonstrates to the market that proven solutions are available to reduce port emissions and improve air quality in coastal communities.”
e1 Marine provides an immediately viable, low- to zero-pollution alternative to fossil fuels, supporting the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts. The patented STAX’s C&C technology easily attaches to auxiliary and boiler exhausts across all vessel classes without modification, removing 99% of particulate matter (PM) and 95% of nitrogen oxides (NOx) before releasing purified gas.
“Our partnership with e1 Marine highlights our dedication to providing solutions that are both available now and immediately effective for the maritime industry. We’re committed to going beyond emissions compliance, driving the industry toward a cleaner, more sustainable future,” said Mike Walker, CEO of STAX. “We’re excited to integrate e1 Marine’s power generator running on hydrogen fuel cells into our operations, ensuring STAX operates in the most environmentally friendly way possible.”
