We’re thrilled to announce a groundbreaking collaboration between Element 1 and Ballard Power Systems, a global leader in fuel cell solutions, aimed at advancing the accessibility and sustainability of hydrogen power for diverse applications. This partnership marks a significant step in expanding hydrogen-based energy solutions to global markets in heavy-duty transportation, marine, and off-road sectors.
Driving Innovation in Hydrogen Production and Fuel Cell Integration
This initiative leverages our unique on-demand hydrogen generation technology in conjunction with Ballard’s cutting-edge fuel cell solutions to offer a seamless, scalable pathway to cleaner energy. The joint program’s initial phase showcases the synergy between Ballard’s FCwave™ 200kW fuel cell engine and Element 1’s M/L18 hydrogen generator, which can produce 235kg of high-purity hydrogen daily. Together, these technologies provide on-site hydrogen in the range of 0.7-2.2 BarG, designed to support the energy needs of heavy-duty and industrial applications.
Our M/L series generators utilize a feedstock mix of methanol and water to deliver fuel cell-grade hydrogen that meets ISO 14687-2019 standards, all while lowering costs associated with compressed and liquid hydrogen. This reforming technology brings an affordable, scalable alternative to power-intensive electrolyzers, offering a cost-effective entry point for hydrogen-powered vehicles and material handling equipment.
Sustainable, Cost-Effective Solutions for Long-Term Impact
Element 1’s technology eliminates the infrastructure challenges tied to traditional hydrogen distribution. By using methanol-water solutions that can be stored and transported with existing infrastructure, we’re streamlining the supply chain, reducing costs, and promoting greater adoption of hydrogen power.
A key highlight of this partnership is the ability for existing FCwave™ units to integrate with our M/L18 generator via a simple software upgrade, instantly reducing operational costs. When renewable methanol is used, the carbon footprint is minimized, supporting cleaner energy solutions across industries.
Unlocking New Possibilities for Marine and Stationary Applications
With Ballard’s FCwave™ technology, which meets rigorous standards set by DNV, Lloyd's Register, and ABS for marine environments, this collaboration brings robust, scalable solutions to maritime and stationary applications. Together, Element 1 and Ballard Power Systems are poised to reshape the hydrogen power landscape with reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy.
